Who Am I? The Final Chapter !

As I reach the 24th and final post of this blog, I want to step away from the academic theories and historical analyses of dance to answer a question that defines everything I do: Who am I?

My Roots: Rajathalawa

I am Amali Sewwandi, a daughter of a small, beautiful village called Rajathalawa, nestled near Gampola in the Kandy district. My identity is firmly rooted in my family. I am the daughter of a hardworking father who serves as a security guard at the SLTB depot and a devoted mother who keeps our home together. I grew up alongside two elder sisters one now serving in the Irrigation Department and the other a successful graduate working in insurance and a younger brother who is currently in Grade 9.

The Accidental Dancer

It’s ironic, but the person you see today deeply immersed in the world of dance was not always a lover of the art. I remember my father practically dragging me to a local Gurunanse’s class when I was a child. That forced first step became the foundation of my life. From those village classes to the hallowed halls of the University of the Visual and Performing Arts, my journey has been shaped by the discipline of the art and the guidance of teachers who became like second parent

The Grind Behind the Grace

While my academic record shows success 115 for the Scholarship exam, 5As for O/Levels, and 3As at A/Levels the reality of my university life is far from a "leisurely" student experience. Because my family’s economic situation didn't allow me to simply sit at home and study, I stepped out to work.

My days begin at 7:00 AM as an office assistant at a biscuit export company and end only when I return home at 7:00 PM. The assignments you have read on this blog were often completed in the silent hours of the night, fueled by exhaustion but driven by a dream. At 22, I take immense pride in being self-sufficient and not being a burden to my parents. Every sleepless night is an investment in the "flowers" I hope to see bloom in my future.

Looking Ahead

My journey doesn't end here. My heart is set on becoming a Dance Teacher in a government school, sharing the soul of our traditions with the next generation. Tucked away in a corner of my mind is also a burning ambition to return to my university as a Lecturer.

A Note of Gratitude

I am here because of the sweat of my father and the prayers of my mother. They took on every challenge so that I could have a future. Today, as I close this blog, I stand ready to face any obstacle to make them proud and to keep them happy.
